The production version of Volkswagen’s new entry-level electric model is expected to debut in 2027, while the show car is scheduled to be unveiled in early March. With a price tag of about €20,000, this reasonably priced EV is meant to appeal to a wide range of consumers.
Volkswagen’s future strategy will heavily rely on this new model as the company reaffirms its dedication to affordable electric mobility. Since the ID. family was introduced in 2019, the company has already made a name for itself in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market, selling over 1.35 million ID. models, including about 500,000 ID.3 units. Volkswagen delivered 383,100 all-electric cars in 2023 alone.
“The Wolfsburg plant has a clear future ahead of it,” said Thomas Schäfer, CEO of the brand. “We are making room for contemporary technologies by moving the production of golf to Mexico. In Hall 54, new production techniques will be presented. There, we intend to develop the next-generation electric Golf and the high-volume electric T-Roc on the new SSP platform. Wolfsburg will become the capital of our new all-electric compact class as a result.”
VW’s new electric compact car portfolio, created under the Brand Group Core, includes the production version of the ID. 2all and the impending entry-level model. The most recent iteration of the modular electric drive (MEB) architecture will serve as the foundation for these small EVs. As Volkswagen’s first all-electric tiny car, the production version of the ID. 2all, the first in the range, is scheduled to go on sale in 2026 for less than €25,000.
