Tesla has started looking for property in India to build an electric vehicle (EV) production facility, and Maharashtra has emerged as its top pick. According to reports, Tesla has also contacted Tata Motors executives about a potential partnership.
This comes after Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met recently in the United States. According to the article, Tesla is looking for legislative incentives to help it enter the Indian market, such as reduced import taxes on EVs.
Given that Tesla already has an office and a number of suppliers in Pune, Maharashtra is strategically important to the company. Potential locations in Chakan and Chikhali, two areas close to Pune that are well-known automotive hubs and home to major manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Volkswagen, and Bajaj Auto, have been suggested by government authorities.
Discussions are still going on, though, and Tesla is considering a number of variables before deciding. The location’s closeness to a port, which would ease logistics and exports, is one important factor. After losing well-known projects like the Tata-Airbus aviation project and the Vedanta-Foxconn semiconductor plant to other states in the past, the Maharashtra administration is still wary. There is still a chance that Tesla will choose a different site given the competitive environment.
Tesla has posted job postings for 13 positions across car servicing, sales, customer support, operations, and business development on LinkedIn, indicating a renewed focus on India. Given that these positions are located in Delhi and Mumbai, it seems likely that Tesla would open sales showrooms there.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Tesla has contacted executives at Tata Motors, a prominent EV producer in India, perhaps to discuss potential collaborations. According to the source, senior executive Prashanth Menon, who oversaw Tesla’s operations in India until being transferred to the Netherlands in 2022, is anticipated to be key in the company’s India strategy after his return.
Given the growing Indian EV market and changing governmental frameworks, Tesla is still very interested in establishing a production facility there. However, discussions with state governments and the venture’s overall viability will determine the final location of the plant.
