Tata Passenger Electric Mobility has officially begun production of passenger vehicles at its new factory in Sanand, Gujarat. The inauguration of the facility and the rollout of the first Tata-branded car were celebrated in the presence of TPEM Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, and the leadership team from the Passenger and Electric Vehicles businesses.
Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, expressed his delight in seeing the first car leave the new plant. He commended the factory’s effective retooling in 12 months to handle a wide range of present items and future models. Chandra expressed his thanks to the Gujarat government and personnel, underlining the facility’s critical role in leading Tata Motors, particularly TPEM, toward greater success.
Chandra further stated, “Tata Motors Passenger & Electric Vehicles business has delivered market-beating growth over the last few years. We have strong plans to sustain this momentum, with our robust pipeline of future-ready ‘New Forever’ products and proactive investments in electric vehicles. With existing capacities near saturation, this new facility will unlock an additional state-of-the-art manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, which is scalable to 420,000 units per annum.”
The new plant, located in the industrial center of GIDC Sanand and with access to a robust supplier network, was bought from Ford India on January 10, 2023. Tata Motors’ second facility in Gujarat, spanning 460 acres, produces both ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) and EV (Electric Vehicle) models. The facility is divided into four primary shops: stamping, body building, painting, and final assembly, all of which are equipped with high levels of automation and cutting-edge technology to assure precise manufacture. Several world-class technologies have been introduced, creating new standards in the industry.
Major retooling and technological advancements have been carried out in many sectors of the factory, including the Press, Weld, Paint, and Assembly shops. The facility now employs over 1000 employees and technicians, with plans to generate another 1000 positions in the next 3 to 4 months to coincide with production ramp-up plans. Tata Motors has invested in upskilling its employees, offering them Diplomas, Bachelor of Engineering, and Master’s Degrees when needed. The factory is committed to sustainability and features a 50 KW solar rooftop. It is planned to be water positive by December 2024.
