Following the footsteps of its premiere shows held in the USA & Germany, The Battery Show India 2023 is scheduled to be held from 4-6 Oct 2023 in Delhi. Gathering some of the notable dignitaries from the electric mobility space, this event will connect expert industry leaders, top battery manufacturers, and inquiring buyers all in one space. Shedding some light on what to be expected in the upcoming Battery Show India 2023, Manas Nandi, Editor in Chief, EV Mechanica & BISInfotech had a candid talk with Rajneesh Khattar, Group Director, Informa Markets. Below are the following excerpts.
Q. The Battery Show India is scheduled for October 2023. What can we expect in this edition of India’s biggest Battery Show?
Yes, the launch edition of The Battery Show, India which is a legacy inherited from The Battery Shows in the USA AND Stuttgart, Germany, is scheduled to be held from 4 – 6 October 2023 wherein it’s being strategically Co-Located with our flagship 16th edition of Renewable Energy India (REI) 2023 Expo.
The industry will witness the commitments of India in the Energy Storage space and the intent of top global players who are eager to showcase their path-breaking technologies at the expo. The Battery Show India is able to rope in some of the top tech brands from Europe, the USA, Canada and India. It’d be a Knowledge Festival which every stakeholder must enjoy, learn and leverage. The expo is estimated to attract more than 150 Brands, 8000 + Trade Visitors and engaging on-site conference sessions alongside CEO & CTO Conclaves, Industry Awards and multiple sectoral engagement activities
Q. What according to you is the role of domestic manufacturing in this segment?
For a growing economy like India which is so rich in natural and man-made resources and is famous for its highest intellect, it’s so imperative to strengthen its domestic manufacturing domain in every line of business. This will not only give a push to our “Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self Reliant India)” campaign but will also hedge the risks of loss to the exchequer by means of imports and supply chains being disrupted as the world witnessed in the recent past. To be Self Reliant is NOT a statement alone, it’s a vision of our Country and so critical for the overall economic development of the nation. This will not only let technologies “stay” within us but will also give a fillip to employment generation opening doors for being an export hub too sooner than later. It doesn’t advocate a Self-Centred ecosystem, but, concerns for global prosperity and happiness. The recent revelations of Lithium-ion reserves in the Indian states of J&K and Rajasthan have been welcoming news for investors and technology players to look towards India with hope and assurance.
Q. Will THE BATTERY SHOW INDIA help Indian manufacturers to learn new technologies from their international counterparts?
For sure……More than 100% for the very rationale that the Indian edition is the brand extension of heritage inculcated from Battery Show USA and Europe and the top technology players, and manufacturers have already started making beelines for the show. Am extremely thankful to the stakeholders for making the launch edition a runaway success already. The next big thrust is to carve out a knowledge-driven conference wherein the global thought leaders will unleash their domain expertise and share it with the Indian community.
In the ongoing edition, the major push is to have the core of the new generation battery technologies, the Advanced Chemistry Cells, Battery safety features and recycling technologies. Will be adding EVs and HEVs in the next edition or so
The Indian Government has brought overall optimism to the EV industry. Can you share anecdotal preferences to support it?
The magnitude of optimism is immense as of this moment as Energy Storage is the next big thing in this industry. From the generation of clean energy to storing the same is the motto to which our upcoming events in REI + Battery Show will do full justice. There are so many such anecdotes to support the optimism that the Government of India has brought to the table. A few of these are :
- EV 30 @ 30: To reach 30 % sales share for EVs by 2030 presenting a cumulative investment opportunity of US$ 266 Bn. This also aligns with the broader goals of reducing the carbon intensity of its economy by 45% by 2030 as announced at COP26
- India’s EV market is expected to expand CAGR of 49% between 2021-2030, with the segment’s volumes to cross annual sales of 17 Mn units by 2030
- Total charging stations in India increased by 285% y-o-y in FY22; Government initiatives likely to further the expansion to 4,00,000 by FY 26
- Indian E-2W market would add 4.5 Mn-5 Mn by 2025, accounting for 25%-30% of the total market, and 9 Mn by 2030.
- Electric 3-wheelers are likely to account for 30% of new sales by 2025.
- Production linked incentive schemes (Auto and Advanced Chemistry cell manufacturing) with a combined budgetary outlay of INR 44,038 Cr to drive the growth of Electric vehicles.
- NITI Aayog has proposed setting up three to four Giga factories in India, for manufacturing lithium-ion batteries, in the next couple of years. The policy Think Tank of the Government of India announced that the Indian government is planning to invest around US$4 billion to set up Tesla-style Giga factories.
- Under FAME-India Scheme phase-II, incentives are provided to buyers of electric vehicles in the form of an upfront reduction in the purchase price of electric vehicles. The incentive is linked to battery capacity i.e. Rs. 10,000/KWh for e-3W and e-4W with a cap of 20% of the cost of the vehicle.
Q. Being the organizer of the biggest Battery Show and conference in India, how do you see the Indian EV market growing?
My 1 – word answer is “NORTHWARDS” ………………It’s only a matter of time before the world will witness India growing exponentially in this field as well. The stage is well set for the top Indian and International players to make the most of India’s resources and be part of India’s growth story
With India, we all will grow and with India, we all will glow.
