In its 57-year existence, Mercedes-AMG is creating an SUV wholly in-house for the first time. AMG’s exclusive AMG.EA electric high-performance platform is the foundation for this ground-breaking off-road vehicle, “Born in Affalterbach.” Prototype test drives are planned to start this winter.
Since the introduction of the groundbreaking ML 55 AMG more than 25 years ago, high-performance SUVs have been a key component of AMG’s lineup. The high-performance SUV market was created by this ground-breaking model and has continued to expand ever since. The GLA, GLB, GLC, GLE, GLS, and EQE SUV are among the six SUV model lines that Mercedes-AMG now offers. The renowned Mercedes-AMG G 63, a symbol of performance-driven off-road vehicles, is also available.
Since AMG is creating the entire vehicle architecture on its own for the first time, this new SUV project represents a significant milestone. After the initial model, which is presently undergoing testing, the full-size SUV will be the second vehicle constructed on the all-electric AMG.EA platform. It will further solidify Affalterbach’s heritage of high-performance engineering by joining AMG’s prestigious range of internally produced automobiles, which already includes the GT, SL, SLS, and previous GT models.
For many years, SUVs have been one of our most popular models. In response to this trend, we are providing our clients with an incredibly fascinating high-performance off-road vehicle built on the AMG.EA platform with the “Born in Affalterbach” SUV. The guiding principle of our new high-performance architecture is “AMG First, EV Second.” According to Michael Schiebe, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of the Mercedes-Maybach and Mercedes-Benz G-Class divisions, “this means that the vehicles not only excel as electric vehicles but also embody the core AMG qualities of emotion and performance.”
