In an effort to promote swappable battery technology for electric vehicles in India, Matel Motion & Energy Solutions and Honda Power Pack Energy India (HEID) have formed a strategic alliance.
The partnership will combine Honda’s swappable battery technology with Matel’s electric powertrain systems to provide a solution that tackles two enduring issues in EV adoption: long charging periods and restricted range.
Honda’s automotive background contributes significant knowledge to the development of lithium-ion batteries. HEID wants to expand to Delhi and Mumbai in addition to running battery-swapping infrastructure in Bangalore.
“We are pleased to announce the collaboration with Matel Motion to accelerate the penetration of EVs in India,” said Tomohide Haraguchi, Vice President of Honda Power Pack Energy India. “Our service is particularly beneficial for B2B customers with high daily usage. Increasing battery capacity or adopting quick-charging solutions often leads to higher vehicle costs and battery replacement expenses over time. Our solution mitigates these challenges, ensuring long-term safety and reliability.”
As per the agreement, Matel will modify its powertrain solutions to smoothly integrate with the ecosystem of Honda’s swappable batteries. Manufacturers who currently use Matel’s fixed-battery systems will simply need to change the interface to switch to swappable versions, keeping the same underlying technology.
Advanced electric powertrain solutions, such as motors, controllers, and geartrains, are the focus of Matel, an Indian technology business. The business creates goods for industrial usage as well as a range of vehicle types, including buses and two-wheelers. Matel helps India achieve its local manufacturing objectives by emphasising energy efficiency and utilising its own R&D capabilities.
