Maruti and Toyota will share the future eVX SUV, with the latter demonstrating the urban SUV idea, much as the companies do now with the Baleno-Glanza, Ertiga-Rumion, and a few other vehicles, as we previously reported. We’ve now learned that the future Maruti all-electric MPV, codenamed the YMC and set to appear in India in September 2026 as part of a launch blitz over the following several years, will also have a Toyota-badged variant available at a later date.
The YMC MPV and eVX SUV will use the same Toyota-derived chassis as well as engine options; thus, having Maruti and Toyota-badged versions of the SUV and MPV makes commercial sense for both companies by extending economies of scale. Toyota’s electric SUV, based on the Urban SUV concept, is likely to debut in 2025–26; given that Maruti eVX costs are scheduled to be disclosed by March 2025, Toyota’s derivative will come around 9–12 months later.
Maruti Suzuki expects the MPV to have a volume potential of over 50,000 to 1 lakh units once it arrives late in 2026. Between the eVX and YMC, the company is eyeing combined production volumes of 2.5 lakh units per annum in a short span of 2-3 years of market launch, say people in the know. Speaking of the launch of Toyota’s version of the YMC, prices for the electric MPV are expected to be announced about a year after the production-spec Urban SUV concept arrives.
“If all goes as per plan, Maruti Suzuki may be the largest producer of EVs in the country by 2027–28. Not only will the upcoming SUV and MPV cater to the Indian market, but they will also have very high export volumes. Plus, the model will be shared with Toyota for the Indian market,” said one of the four people in charge of the development.
