To hasten the shift to electric vehicles, Mahindra & Mahindra has launched its Electric Origin SUVs BE 6e and XEV 9e at disruptive costs, undercutting popular internal combustion engine vehicles on the road by Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. These models are the first of six EVs that Mahindra plans to produce under the BE and XEV brands. New models will be released until 2028.
The fourth quarter of this fiscal year will see the start of these SUV deliveries.
Rajesh Jejurikar, ED & CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra’s Automotive and Farm Equipment Sector, launched the cars, saying, “We think we have a very competitive product, which will create a category. We have consistently stated that this is about establishing a particular lifestyle, not about EVs or not. We think we have established a new category in the Indian car market by combining “unlimited” love, technology, performance, and affordability. The issue of whether M&M will be a niche or mainstream player has long existed, but the business is poised to disrupt the mid-size SUV market with this aggressive price tag.
The electric-only INGLO platform from Mahindra serves as the foundation for the BE 6e and XEV 9e.
Both the BE 6e and the XEV 9e are powered by lithium iron phosphate battery packs and have ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)-certified ranges of up to 682 and 656 kilometers, respectively. With a 175kW DC charger, the batteries can be fast-charged from 20% to 80% in 20 minutes.
The models include “Sonic Studio Experience by Mahindra,” which was created in partnership with 16-time Grammy winner Richard King and AR Rahman, for the comfort and pleasure of the inside. A 1,400-watt Harman Kardon system with 16 speakers and Dolby Atmos is part of the system. The acoustics of famous locations like London’s Wembley Stadium and Mumbai’s Royal Opera House are authenticated by a special VenueScapes Live function.
With five radars and one vision camera, the cars have advanced safety features like ADAS Level 2+. The “Secure360” system offers in-cabin monitoring and 360-degree cameras for thorough surveillance. Twelve ultrasonic sensors are used by the “Autopark” feature to perform different parking maneuvers.
From its ₹16,000 crore EV budget for FY22–FY27, the firm is investing ₹4,500 crore, with an emphasis on advanced technologies, product development, and production scaling. Mahindra wants its Pune factory to be able to produce 10,000 ground-up EVs by March 2025.
