As per the Bureau of Energy Efficiency data, Karnataka has emerged as a front-runner in India’s EV sector among tier-1 cities with the highest number of public charging stations.
Out of the 5,880 public charging points in the state, 4,626 are primarily in Bengaluru and other tier-1 cities. This places Karnataka significantly ahead of other large states such as Delhi, which has 1,951 points, and Maharashtra, which has 2,454 points, all of which were developed over the past five years.
Though much of this infrastructure is to be found within the capital city, Karnataka’s footprint for EV is expanding in the non-metropolitan space as well. It is to be seen that the State already has 285 charging stations located within tier-2 cities and 969 within tier-3 municipalities.
In its Karnataka 2025-26 State Budget, the state government released a series of ambitious proposals to advance the State’s electric transport goal. Opening a state-of-the-art EV test track and a dedicated EV manufacturing and research hub in the Bengaluru region are among them. To generate one lakh clean mobility jobs, the government plans to invest ₹50,000 crore.
As per transport experts, the present success is due to the State’s initial and ambitious policy measures.
“Karnataka was smart to make its 2017 EV policy. Even the number of charging points in Bengaluru shows how infrastructure can build customer confidence. But to enhance user experience, now one needs to focus on enhancing interoperability, standardizing prices, and making real-time availability information available,” says transport expert M. N. Srihari.”.
BEE statistics show that India currently Houses 26,367 public charging points. The statistics, however, point to glaring regional gaps, with numerous States falling behind charging points in the urban centers.
