The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) is dedicated to crafting an inclusive Electric Vehicle (EV) roadmap aligned with the Government of India’s vision of Viksit Bharat. Recently, the MHI established an EV task force, with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) spearheading matters concerning electric trucks.
This initiative aims to bolster infrastructure development in India. Collaborating with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and other agencies, the MHI intends to engage stakeholders through workshops and meetings facilitated by the ICCT.
Given that the transport sector is the fastest-growing contributor to climate change, with medium and heavy-duty trucks accounting for a significant portion of vehicular emissions, the adoption of EVs becomes crucial for meeting objectives under the Paris Agreement and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Amit Bhatt, India Managing Director at ICCT, expressed enthusiasm about contributing to the task force, emphasizing the importance of electrifying trucks for sustainable transport and commerce.
