The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Hyundai Motor Group have joined together to conduct research on electrification and batteries. In order to meet the unique demands of the Indian market in these areas, IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, and IIT Madras have partnered.
Hyundai Motor Group sponsorships will help establish a Hyundai Center of Excellence (CoE) at IIT Delhi. The goal of the CoE is to promote research and development in electrification and battery technology, fostering innovation in keeping with India’s increasing emphasis on sustainable mobility.
Representatives from Hyundai and the IITs signed a deal to create the Hyundai Motor Group-IIT Hyundai CoE during a ceremony at IIT Delhi. Among the officials in attendance were IIT Delhi Director Prof. Rangan Banerjee, IIT Bombay Dean Sachin C. Patwardhan, and IIT Madras Dean Manu Santhanam.
Beginning in 2025, Hyundai Motor Group intends to invest roughly USD 7 million over five years to promote collaborative research projects with the IITs. Initially concentrating on electrification and battery technologies, the research is anticipated to eventually expand into software and hydrogen fuel cells.
The collaboration is in line with Hyundai’s overarching objective of supporting the growth of India’s electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem. Additionally, IIT Delhi’s Centre for Automotive Research and Tribology (CART), which specializes in EV-related research, will be included in the partnership.
In addition to research, the Hyundai CoE will promote academic-industrial cooperation by facilitating technical and human resource exchanges. This includes technical exchange meetings, special lectures by Hyundai experts, and Korean training programs for IIT students and researchers. These efforts aim to nurture talent and provide long-term employment opportunities.
