Hero MotoCorp plans to put the all-electric Surge 32 into series production in less than a year. The newly established L2/L5 category now allows the registration of this unusual vehicle, which combines a two-wheeler and a three-wheeler. Hero MotoCorp is expected to produce 10,000 units annually, according to sources, and the model might be prepared for a market debut by the middle of 2025.
Hero MotoCorp and Surge had to collaborate with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways to establish a new registration category for the S32 in order to have it certified for registration. The term “L2-5” refers to a “2-Wheeler-3-Wheeler Combi Module of a three-wheeled motor vehicle constructed in such a way that a non-self-propelled rear module unit is combined with a two-wheeled vehicle of category L2.” When necessary, it can be divided or mixed together.
“Surge,” a startup that is entirely owned by Hero MotoCorp (it is a member of HeroHatch, the company’s incubation center), has spent the last few years developing a modular EV platform that it calls the S32. This platform serves as the foundation for the Surge 32. Its ability to swiftly and easily switch between two-wheelers and three-wheelers is what sets it apart. With 40 patents, the Surge 32 is essentially a rickshaw without a front wheel that an e-scooter inserts into to serve as the front wheel. The e-scooter’s back wheel is elevated off the ground and rests on the rickshaw platform in this configuration.
With its ability to transform from a two-wheeler to a three-wheeler in just three minutes, the Surge 32, which was designed and constructed in India, is redefining the way people think about three-wheelers. It was recently recognized with the Red Dot: Best of the Best award in product design.
