Greaves Electric Mobility has unveiled the Nexus, an all-electric scooter, under Ampere, the e-two-wheeler brand. The Nexus has a 136km certified range, a sleek design language with contemporary components, and an emphasis on utility. Young consumers in the 30- to 39-year-old age range are the scooter’s target market.
The entry-level EX model of the scooter costs Rs 109,900, ex-showroom, while the higher ST trim, which has a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster, costs Rs 119,900, ex-showroom. According to K Vijaya Kumar, CEO and Executive Director, of Greaves Electric Mobility, “At Greaves Electric Mobility, we strive to create smart and sustainable last-mile mobility solutions. Our electric two-wheeler brand Ampere is one of the predominant manufacturers and retailers of e-two-wheelers in India.”
The Ampere Nexus has a roomy seat with a grab grip made of aluminium for the pillion, LED lighting throughout, and a 7-inch TFT touchscreen with built-in navigation. The cluster is equipped with a Renesas platform-based automotive-grade OSEK operating system. According to the manufacturer, the Nexus’s design emulates the toughness, agility, and aerodynamics of the “Arctic Tern” bird.
The scooter features air vents in the front and back panels to help ventilate the powertrain, and modular panels ensure simplicity of maintenance. To provide a lightweight and robust chassis that facilitates handling, the Ampere Nexus is unique in that it features a hybrid die-cast and manufactured tubular swingarm.
The Ampere Nexus boasts an LFP chemistry battery with a certified range of 136km. The company says LFP is thermally more stable compared to NMC and offers a 30 per cent more serviceable life. The scooter offers a recharge time of under four hours. The 3kWh lithium-ion battery powers a 4kW mid-drive motor that powers the rear wheel with a belt-drive system.
The Ampere Nexus also utilises a two-stage gear reduction system for optimising the power and torque delivered to the wheel and also ensures a low-noise operation of the powertrain. The company says the gear ratios can be modified to offer different speed applications with the Nexus.
Greaves Electric Mobility says it has created a modern platform with the Nexus that will enable it to introduce more products in the future. The company has applied for multiple patents, including that for the drivetrain swingarm with 5 patents, as well as that for the functional louvres that aid aero-thermal management of the drivetrain.
The company will manufacture the Ampere Nexus at its Ranipet facility near Vellore, Tamil Nadu, where it has an installed capacity to produce 500,000 units annually, and could be expanded further to double the capacity. While the company did not disclose its volume ambitions with the Nexus, Greaves Electric Mobility will leverage Ampere’s strong 400 sales outlets, and over 350 service touchpoints across the country, to garner maximum volumes for its latest e-scooter offering. It is also expanding its service workforce which presently stands at over 1,000 technicians.
