Joint Operation Unifying Last-mile Electrification, or JOULE, is a new cooperative effort that was unveiled by The Climate Pledge, a partnership of multiple companies. Together with business partners, the participants to this initiative have been charged with building a network of shared electric vehicle (EV) charging stations throughout Bengaluru.
The Climate Pledge was co-founded in 2019 by Global Optimism and Amazon. Ten years before the Paris Agreement, in 2040, net-zero carbon emissions are to be achieved.
Signatories to the pledge and partners agree to contribute more than $2.65 million to the initiative by the year 2030. Amazon, Mahindra Logistics, Uber, HCLTech, and Magenta Mobility will collaborate to optimise the usage of the EV charging stations.
By the end of this year, the project hopes to have five more EV charging stations built in Bengaluru. The first EV charging station is currently fully operational and is situated at Doddakallasandra. In order to accommodate the rising need for regional EV infrastructure, there are also plans to grow even more.
By 2030, the project is estimated to support about 5,500 electric cars (EVs) in Bengaluru, based on projected demand. When fully loaded, though, it can hold about 9,500 EVs. The infrastructure will also be available for other businesses to use during the day to charge their fleet cars in order to maximize utilisation.
