Brose, an automotive supplier, is adding an acoustic warning system for electrified vehicles to its lineup of products. The new device will be installed in several million electric and hybrid vehicles in North America and Europe as early as 2026 by the family-owned business.
Electric cars are nearly silent on the road, especially when they are first started and traveling at modest speeds. The risk is that other drivers may not notice the oncoming vehicle until much later due to delayed auditory perception. Therefore, the installation of a warning system is subject to laws across the globe.
Brose has developed its own AVAS (Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System) that generates artificial driving noise at speeds below 50 km/h. In doing so, the mechatronics specialist drew on its expertise in the fields of acoustics and electronics, for example from the development of sound boxes for door modules. The module’s wide frequency range of 200 to 5,000 hertz enables high-quality sounds and individual sound designs. Thanks to the use of innovative simulation tools, the development could also be completed in just a few months.
